ポール・オースター『Baumgartner』の「14」に関するメモ
ポール・オースターの遺作『Baumgartner』を読んだ。 “fourteen ticks of the clock”というところでなぜ14?と気になって、14が出てくるところをマークしていったら、これがけっこうある。 ざっとあげてみる： fourteenth Street、fourteen years later、her much older husband (by fourteen years)、fourteen-year-old、fourteen autobiographical texts 文学的・象徴的な観点では、14はソネットの行数であり、詩人でもあるオースターが仕込んだ美しい呼応とも読み取れる。 また、オースターは14歳の時、隣にいた少年が雷に打たれて死ぬのを目撃した。このことが彼の人生を大きく変えたという（“The Paris Review”、BBC interview 2012など）。 https://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/121/the-art-of-fiction-no-178-paul-auster https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-radio-and-tv-19948116 つまり14はオースターにとって、死の偶然性を初めて知った年齢である。作品に散りばめられた「14」の群れは、すべてこの原体験を静かに指し示す暗号として織り込まれているのかもしれない。 ここで『Baumgartner』の一節も思い出す。 “Life is dangerous, Marion, and anything can happen to us at any moment.
